History

History of the Cumberland Society of Painters

One of the elements that binds the Cumberland Society of Painters together is the admiration of the same group of artists. Each of the members looks to John Singer Sargent, Sorolla, Anders Zorn, Repin, Henri, Kroyer, Hawthorne, Carlson, Edgar Payne not because of style or subject matter, but for their viewpoints. There is a thread of excellence that unites the work of these painters. They painted in direct response to what they saw and they believed that painting from life was essential to the development of their power of observation. The Cumberland Society of Painters members strive for this same level of accomplishment.

“We don’t wish to retrace the journey of these artists, but to apply their aesthetics to our modern world and continue the Journey into the 21st century. “
